Head of the Department of Urology and Nephrology at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr John Edward Mensah, has disclosed that the hospital’s Renal Unit currently provides dialysis treatment to at least 90 patients every day, highlighting the growing demand for renal care services.

He said the continuous availability of dialysis consumables remains critical to sustaining operations at the unit and ensuring that patients receive uninterrupted treatment.

Speaking after receiving a GH¢100,000 donation from the Office of the Presidential Envoy on Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, Dr Mensah expressed appreciation for the support and stressed that regular access to essential supplies remains critical to the survival of patients undergoing dialysis.

He explained that the unit currently operates with 30 dialysis machines and is expected to receive an additional 25 machines from other departments to expand its capacity and improve service delivery.

According to him, the increasing number of patients requiring dialysis makes it necessary for stakeholders to continue supporting the unit to ensure uninterrupted treatment.

Dr Mensah also drew attention to infrastructure challenges affecting the comfort of patients, particularly the size of some dialysis beds available at the facility.

He explained that some of the existing beds are too small for taller and larger patients, despite the fact that dialysis sessions can last for about four hours depending on a patient’s medical condition.

The Head of Urology and Nephrology therefore appealed to individuals, corporate institutions and organisations to support efforts to improve the unit’s infrastructure and enhance the overall experience of patients receiving renal care.

The donation, presented on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama by a delegation led by Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, was funded partly from proceeds raised during the 2026 National Day of Thanksgiving, with additional support from the Office of the Presidential Envoy.
